International Museum Day
Every year, since 1977, ICOM organizes the International Museum Day. An exceptional and special moment for the international museum community.
International Museum Day (IMD) aims to increase people’s awareness, by sensitizing them as the extremely important mean of cultural exchange and enrichment.
For more than 40 years, this International Museum Day has been celebrated every 18th of May. These celebrations can last a day, a weekend or even a whole week. Last year, this event was attended by 37,000 museums from 158 countries and territories.
Oporto gives you a myriad of reasons to get to know its museums and the city.
Celebrate Porto Museums Day with us and participate in visits, concerts, circuits and so many other programs for all ages. This year, 2019 we can count with more than 30 Museums and 70 activities.
Some of the museums that will participate in this day are:
Soares dos Reis National Museum
Oporto Botanical Garden – Museum of Natural History and Science of the Oporto University.
Among many others museums, they guarantee activities for adults and children from nine in the morning until ten at night. You can also find places with guided tours and with free tickets.
Besides, some of the museums will adhere to the initiative of the European Museum Night leaving their door open during the night. The Museums Night is an initiative created in 2005 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France.
The purpose of this event is to organize various activities such as theater and dance performances, concerts, guided and staged tours. Including many others activities they would like to invite guests to experience a different, enriching and unique experience during this night.
The museums that will be open in this evening are the Museum of the Brotherhood of Clerics, the Museum of the Hospital Center of Porto, the Museum of Paper and Money and the Museum of Transport and Communications.
