Dorothée Munyaneza – Unwanted
Dorothée Munyaneza is a 35 years old British-Rwandan singer, actress, dancer and choreographer. She was born in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Her family fled to London during the Rwandan genocide in 1994, when she was 12.
In 2004, she composed and performed the original soundtrack for Hotel Rwanda, and between collaborations, she released her first solo album in 2010.
Dorothée Munyaneza created her first major international work, Samedi Détente (Saturday Relaxation), in 2014, inspired in her childhood memories in Rwanda.
Unwanted is her second work to examine the generational wound of genocide. More specifically the physical and mental consequences of rape used as a mechanism of war.
Munyaneza developed Unwanted after traveling to Rwanda for a commemorative journey, an experience that led to interviews with women survivors and their children. She wrote, “I want to share their testimonies, I want to sing their sorrows and hopes, I want to dance their lives, their scars, their marks, for they leave some behind. We cannot remain indifferent.”
Munyaneza performs together with the American singer Holland Andrews and Alain Mahé a French electronic music composer.
