Discover the Portuguese Carnival
One Trip with Double Experiences!
We invite you to discover the Portuguese Carnival while in Porto. Carnival in Portugal has a long tradition and millenary roots and is still one of the most important festivities of the country.
The most important Portuguese Carnivals are Ovar, Madeira, Estarreja, Loures, Nazaré, Podence, Loulé, Sesimbra, Sines, Elvas and Torres Vedras.
In Ovar the party lasts for almost a month! Party has its peak on the weekend before the Tuesday of Carnival, the day before Ash Wednesday. This Carnival day is the last day of “fat eating” or “gorging” before the fasting period of Lent.
OVAR CARNIVAL
Ovar is one of the biggest Carnival celebrations in the country. It is also one of the oldest celebrations with indications of its beginnings in 1887. The Costume Parades, but above all the good spirits of people that invade the city during these days, are contagious.
Planning of the Costume Parades involves, throughout the year, figurants and their families who, themselves, perform the masks, costumes, props and floats. All loaded with eccentricity, creativity and humor!
March 3rd and 5th are the apotheosis of Ovar Carnival celebrations. The Great Carnival Floats invade Avenue Sá Carneiro, attracting thousands of people. There are about 2,000 figurants, from 14 Carnival Groups, six Runway Groups and four Samba Schools that annually choose a theme for the Group and create a work of creativity and innovation.
Organized Events
Besides, there are several organized events like the “FARRAPADA”, a spontaneous and fun parade where animation and joy are the only rules. Other interesting activities include guided tours to a Cooperage (wine barrel making facility) and to the Carnival Village. In addition, and because of Ovar’s famous “Pão-de-Ló” (Ovar Sponge Cake) the touristic program includes a visit to a “Pão-de-Ló” Production Unit.
Our suggestion is that we welcome you at our handpicked, designed and furnished apartments located in the most interesting and liveliest areas of Porto. You can then explore the city and make a double experience by visiting the Ovar Carnival.
Ovar its only 40 km away from Porto. You can take the train at Sao Bento station, right at the city center and close to both Old Stone Flats properties.
